We have been involved with basenjis since 1986 when we got our first basenji, Katie (Dokhues Quixotic Lady) from breeder Lu Hewes of Dokhues Basenjis. Shortly thereafter we joined and became active in the Basenji Club of Southeastern Wisconsin and the Basenji Club of America, serving as board member, secretary and current president of the Basenji Club of Southeastern Wisconsin, and as Bulletin Board Newsletter editor, national specialty oversight committee member, and junior showmanship liaison for the Basenji Club of America. Lisa is also a member of the Greater Racine (Wisconsin) Kennel Club (all breed).
Amy (Marshall) Rust was active in junior showmanship from age 10 to 18 and was one of the top basenji junior handlers in the country from 1992 - 2000. She and her basenjis Dodger (Ch. Sonbars Celestial Xenith) and Sydney (Ch. Rafikis Not A Moment Too Soon JC F Ch) participated in junior showmanship at several Westminster Kennel Club shows, won a Pedigree regional competition and placed 3rd in the Pedigree finals. Additionally, Amy specialed Sydney in 1998 and was in the basenji top ten for that year. Sydney, now 11 years, is a regional specialty best of breed winner, multiple regional specialty best opposite sex winner, and group winner/multiple group placer, all handled by Amy.
Through our love of this unique breed we have been involved in conformation showing, junior showmanship, lure coursing and most recently, training in agility and rally-o. We have bred three litters and finished 4 home bred champions, among them a regional specialty winners bitch, a national specialty lure coursing best of breed winner, and a national specialty best opposite sex in puppy sweepstakes.
Basenjis have occupied a special place in our lives and hearts for over 20 years, as have the many wonderful friends weve met as a result.
